CHAURI KHOLA HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT

The Chauri Khola Hydroelectric Project (6 MW) is a run-of-river hydropower project developed to utilize the hydropower potential of the Chauri Khola in Kavrepalanchok District, Nepal. The project is located in the Chaurideurali Rural Municipality of Kavrepalanchok District, in the central hilly region of Nepal. The project has an installed capacity of 6 MW and is intended to supply electricity to Nepal’s national power system.

The project is designed to generate renewable electricity by diverting a portion of the river flow through hydraulic structures and conveying the water to a powerhouse, where turbines and generators convert the available hydraulic energy into electrical energy. The major components of the project generally include a diversion/intake structure, settling basin or desander, headrace/conveyance system, forebay, penstock, powerhouse, tailrace, electromechanical equipment, switchyard, and transmission system.

Chauri Khola is a tributary of the Sunkoshi river system, and the area’s steep terrain and elevation difference provide favorable conditions for hydropower development. The project is particularly relevant to Nepal’s long-term energy-development strategy because Nepal possesses substantial hydropower resources but has historically utilized only a portion of its economically and technically feasible potential.
